GERMAN WWII REGT 911 ASSUALT GUN WRAP UNIFORM

A fabulously rare complete assault gun wrap over jacket and matching trousers worn by the same soldier in the famous Assault Gun Regiment (Sturmgeschschutz) 911. Regimentals sold this uniform a few years ago and are delighted to re purchase it. A huge amount of information on Sturmgeschschutz Regiment 911 can be found on the internet, even a dedicated book regarding this unit has been published by Heimdal Publications having over 300 photographs from this regiment’s service in WWII. This large size assault gun jacket in field grey, standard configuration, wrap over style, four button closure with the facility for the wrap over flap to be closed also. The tunic has seen considerable wear, virtually all of the nap to the exposed areas of the tunic has gone. The wool is of mid to late war construction, slight flecks of white can be seen in the field grey indicating the later war substitute materials placed in the wool to the create the bolts of cloth. All of the insignia and decorations are totally original to the tunic. The shoulder boards of which the field grey centres of the shoulder boards match the tunic exactly are a set of red silk piped Oberfeldwebel’s shoulder boards with surrounding tress, two ranks pips with the regimental numerals 911 applied to the centre of each shoulder board. Matching red silk piped assault gun collar patches with the mouse grey Bevo woven centres. The grey on green Bevo woven breast eagle cross hatch stitched to the front of the tunic, there is no doubt about the originality of the fitting of the eagle to the tunic. To the lower right sleeve is an artillery gun layers yellow on green machine embroidered oval patch, to the upper left hand sleeve the edelweiss mountain troopers patch, to the lower right sleeve a very high quality cellion weave either officers of NCOs thickness Kreta cuff title. The fitting of the Kreta cuff title and the mountain troopers arm shield indicate that he was a former member of the 5th Mountain Division who were involved in the battle of Crete. Just below the breast eagle is the field grey edged German Cross in gold, cloth version. To the top button of the wrap over section of the tunic is a faded Iron Cross 2nd class ribbon, to the right hand breast is a two-section medal ribbon bar of the Entry into Austria medal and the Entry into Czechoslovakia medal. There are loops for four awards to the lower right hand breast with a clear indication in both coloration and where nap is remaining of where the badges were fitted. All panzer and assault gun tunics have two inside pockets, one to the left hand side which is just a rectangular open top pocket and one to the right hand side which runs with the line of the seam of the lining. On the right hand pocket the original owner has fitted a zip for closure of this pocket, the zip runner is missing and many of the teeth are missing. There are very faint ink markings to the upper left hand inner side of the lining with only a few numerals being able to be observed. One moth nip to the upper rear of the collar, another very tiny nip close to the mountain troopers edelweiss badge, another very small nip to one of the back panels, apart from other minor snags the tunic is complete moth free. The only parts of the tunic where nap is still visible are underneath the collar and underneath the turned back of the wrap over front. Accompanying the tunic are the correct assault gun trousers, a very minor shade of colour different from the jacket but with identical wear, again the cloth with much late war white fleck within the weave, all nap gone except under the pocket flaps, complete with its three pronged canvas hidden belt. One sewn repair to the seat and one large square patch inlaid to the right hand knee area as the tunic is viewed, the patch measuring 22 x 27cm. The 911 Sturmgeschschutz Regiment served on the Russian Front, the Italian Front and in Normandy and were basically one of the fire brigade units, their last operational senior unit was the Fuhrer Grenadier Brigade from April 1943 to May 1945 and were attached to the Grossdeutchland Division. With further research it may be possible to narrow the name down of the owner of this uniform by researching the German Cross Winners.
