GERMAN WWII LUFTWAFFE FLIGHT SECTION SCHELLENBAUM BANNER.

Every Luftwaffe band, in which ever arm of the service was led by the complicated piece of band equipment known as The Schellenbaum, surmounted by a huge Luftwaffe eagle and from the beak of the eagle hung a small flag known as the Schellenbaum Banner. This flag measuring 32cm x 27cm in yellow flight silk base, beautifully hand embroidered on the reverse side identifying the airfield, in this case Fligerhorstkommandantur Hildesheim (Hildesheim is close to Hannover). The face side has the beautifully hand embroidered Luftwaffe eagle with four swastikas. The whole flag is heavily bullion fringed. Complete with its hanging pole, its silver cord and to the upper part of the silver cord is inserted a brass ring for attachment to the beak of the Schellenbaum eagle. Although we have owned these before this example, is the first we have experienced also has a small studded hole at the lower part of the banner presumably to steady the banner to the Schellenbaum pole when being carried. A superb relic of the Luftwaffe of WWII. Some minor age to the yellow base but no silk shredding.
