USA WWI NO.5 PROTOTYPE STEEL HELMET.
A very nice example of the No.5 helmet. After America’s entry into the war they were initially using British supplied Brodie helmets but started a programme of experimentation with various shapes and sizes of helmets, possibly 10 or 12 different types were produced, some field tested, some did not even reach trials, this is an example of the No.5. helmet, which did have trials tests, very similar to the post WWI Swiss helmet of 1918. The exterior retains all of its original American factory finish with one minor chipped area. fitted with its three pad leather liner, which was copied from the German M.16, the inner pads missing with its original drawstring and its original American canvas strap and clip.
