GERMAN WWI MECKLENBURG SCHWERIN INFANTRY OFFICERS HELMET.
One of the most difficult States or Duchy’s helmets to obtain of the Imperial German era. Hand inscribed size ‘56’ to the upper inner crown of the leather skull. The skull itself is in very nice condition, minor crazing. Front and rear peaks securely attached to the main body with some minor creasing. Fitted with its original national cockade and correct gold, red and blue Mecklenburg Schwerin cockade. All the gilt fittings, which include the back strap, removable fluted spike, circular spike base, Mecklenburg Schwerin front plate and chinstraps all match in quality of gilt. The gilt has subdued with age but with a slight wash of washing up liquid mixed with water this will brighten the gilt without affecting the integrity of the gilt. The correct Mecklenburg Schwerin nickel overlay plate fitted. The interior leather sweatband shows considerable wear use but all intact without any damage and its original inner silk lining, again matching wear use to the sweatband. This is an untouched helmet from WWI. All of the original washers remain intact behind the two screws for fitting the front plate and the split pins for fitting the spike base to the helmet.
