GERMAN WWII SUBMARINE CAPTAIN’S NAVAL OFFICERS DAGGER.
This item was sold by Regimentals approximately 25 to 30 years ago and we have recently been able to re-purchase it. Standard naval officers dagger, blade by Eickhorn, its double fullered blade in excellent condition with standard naval etched patterns. The Eickhorn trademark is clear, complete with its original red felt washer. The white celluloid grip is totally undamaged with all its grip wire. Good traces of gilt remaining to the swastika adorned pommel and the cross guard. Standard lightning bolt style scabbard, again retaining some traces of gilt in the lower areas. Minor indentations to the scabbard, which are generally expected with naval officers daggers. Complete with its two hanging rings, two upper screws present for the throat without the heads being turned. Engraved in block letters to the upper flat section of the blade close to the cross guard is the name ‘Gotz V. Hartmann’, this same name is engraved in a script pattern on the reverse side of the scabbard in very small letters between the two hanging rings. Kapitan Leutnant Gotz V. Hartmann, born Danzig 1913, served in various naval gunnery schools. Joined the U-Boat Service and commanded U-555 from August 41 to February 42, U-563 from 1st April 42 to 20th May 43, he finally commanded U-441 from 15th May 43 to the 5th August 43. He was hospitalised until January 1943 and moved back to a land base and is final appointment, very interesting was a Commander of the 1st Naval Anti Tank Regiment1 from the 4th April 45 to the capitulation. He was detained and freed in December 1947. Accompanying the dagger is a huge file of documents regarding his boats and other interesting aspects of the German Submarine Service.
