A scarce identified shako from the London Rifle Brigade, late 1800, Victorian crown, blackened London Rifle Brigade officers quality badge. The side of the shako is free of moth however a rodent appears to have taken a nibble out of the lower left edge of the helmet. Complete with its chinstrap, which is very delicate and normally broken away, its green plume, the officers quality leather sweatband has toned. There is an owner’s name and numbers applied. To the upper inner crown the silk maker’s label of ‘Samuel Brothers Military Outfitters and Contractors, Ludgate Hill, London’. The helmet is complete with its cardboard tubular plume holder. Some other areas of the silk inner liner has shot, named to Company Sergeant Major William Henry Oexle, who was in the Boer war and WW1 and in WW11 was part of the Home Guard.
