BRITISH WWII BERGEN RUCKSACK USED BY COMMANDO OFFICER LIEUTENANT COLONEL BILL STIRLING.

William Joseph Stirling was the brother of the founder of the British SAS David Stirling, initially joining the Special Operations Executive he would go on to Command No.62 Commando and then the 2nd Special Air Service, he was the elder brother of David Stirling the founder of the SAS, Standard British issue Bergen rucksack with metallic frame having the army number ‘44418’ hand painted to the outer rear of the rucksack. The style of the painting is classic WWII application. There are no other names of Stirling on the rucksack, however there are two other users names, one with an address, both the names are different, we can only surmise at the end of WWII somehow Bill Stirling’s rucksack was either given away or ended up in some form of early post war charity, it was then used by either hikers or an outdoor person then further passed onto another similar personage, it was only the observations of our collector/supplier who noticed the style of the application of the army number and then followed historical research through to finding out that the number belonged to Bill Stirling.
