GERMAN WWII DEUTSCHLAND ERWACHE CAVALRY BANNER TOP.
The Deutschland Erwache banner to many peoples eyes is the undying visual memory of the Third Reich, thousands of documentaries and still photographs have been made of the Nuremberg rallies, and in every photograph the Deutschland Erwache banner top is the most featured item. The origins of the banner go back to the 1920s, a wonderful sketch created in 1922 is shown on page 44 of the excellent work Deutschland Erwache by Ulric of England, the banners in the form that we now accept created in the middle 1930s, the first banners to be created were for foot units with the large Eagle swastika at its highest point, it was then realised that a further design for a slightly smaller eagle was needed for the mounted units for both the SA and the SS,and the NSKK this new redesign took place in the middle 1930,s. We offer here an outstanding condition example of the SA eagle known as the Reiter eagle, this this particular pole top has the unusual fitting unique to the SA standards at the rear for the fitting of the flag cloth support rail, gilt is good to the eagle although thin in places, the silvering to the lower tubing excellent, the base at the rear of the eagle has the standard Otto Gahr 1935 marking. Further reading on this fascinating subject of the Deutschland Erwache standards can be obtained by obtaining the magnificent work mentioned above by Ulric of England, and we take this opportunity to congratulate Ulric on this wonderful milestone publication.
