GERMAN WWII BERLIN 1936 OLYMPIC OFFICIALS VISOR CAP.
A fabulously rare cap from the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Standard high saddle shape, the form of the cap from the side view is very similar to the construction and shape of the diplomatic officials caps. Large size, although non size stamped, possibly size 57 or 58. Fully fixed white top that the crown has toned with age, some very light foxing to the white heavily grained thick material. White piping to the crown. The centre band is all in black with no upper or lower differential piping. Very delicate rope style silver cap cords with two side buttons. The eagle fitted is the left hand side looking political eagle in white metal, below is a very attractive Olympic ring badge with the exterior ring matching the political style eagle. All of the enamel rings are undamaged. To the interior a grained leather sweatband, which does have minor evidence of wear use. We must remember that these hats would have only been worn during the 3 week period of the Olympic Games. The upper inner crown lining is a very similar texture to the waterproof crown lining of SS caps in a slightly lighter shade with the side lining in the classic russet brown brushed cotton very similar to that used on the army and SS caps of that mid to late 30’s period. A superb visor cap, on page 118 of the excellent double volume work "Sport in The Third Reich" a photo of a White Top cap worn by an official of the Italian delegation, with the text below stating that every country had a specially designed hat for formal occasions during the games.
