BRITISH WWII DUKE OF WELLINGTON’S CHINDITS HEADDRESS.
A fabulous piece of British WWII headdress being the standard jungle hat, size 7. Maker marked ‘Hall & Phillip Limited’ dated ‘1942’. Complete with its original chinstrap and leather sweatband. Some slight moth tracking to the headdress. Fitted to the pagri on the right hand side in white embroidery on a faded red background the letters ‘DW’. A superb firm shape to the hat that was worn with the side brim in the down position to give maximum protection from the sun. The 2nd Battalion Duke of Wellington’s regiment served in South East Asia with the Chindit columns 33 and 76, they saw fierce fighting operating behind enemy lines in the relief of Inphal and Kohima in 1944.. The conditions that these men served in was incredible and they deserve the highest accolade. Ink markings to the inside of the cap, which may have been a name, which has unfortunately now faded, one figure looks like a horizontal number ‘2’ which would indicate the 2nd Battalion.
