GERMAN WWII LUFTWAFFE 1ST PATTERN OFFICERS DAGGER.

From a collection originally acquired in the Channel Islands of Great Britain, all were purchased in the 1970’s. A highly intriguing dagger, the blade being the nickel plated type, generally in good condition with just two small areas of lost plating, which can be seen in our web images. The upper hilt fittings, which are the cross guard and the pommel both in heavy nickel, the grip leather good with all grip wire intact. The scabbard, again, matching all nickel plated fittings with its leather slightly congealed, all intact. The interesting part of this dagger now appears, it is fitted with a set of Luftwaffe 2nd pattern officers straps, the attachment rings are in aluminium, the straps have had their buckles removed and have been resewn in the exact manner as they were originally, very professionally, the brocade is good, the ‘DRGM’ marked belt clip is intact and working correctly there is clear wear between the 2 aluminium loops and the scabbard attachment rings indicating that these straps have definitely had in service wear, We can only speculate that an officer at the period decided that the later pattern straps were more attractive than the set of original nickel chains. As stated above this is from a very old collection, all purchased in the Channel Islands and there may be a case it could possibly have been left in the Channel Islands by one of the Luftwaffe occupying officers, in the configuration it still is today.
