US WWII A2 JACKET.
During the 1930’s a style of leather jacket evolved within the United States that eventually became the official flying jacket of WWII, the model A2. Various private companies made their own interpretations in the 1930’s, the companies experimented with different styles of pocket location, and other small features, eventually evolving in the standard A2 jacket known by collectors today. This particular example manufactured by H.C.B.Corp Sport Apparel New York is identical to the WWII jacket and is known as a pre contract jacket. The jacket has the standard collar with the button down points, the faux epaulettes, two patch pockets to the front both with button down flaps, wool sleeve cuffs and wool bottom band, even the zip is the same use for the contracts of the Company of Talon. Although not size stamped on test we estimate the jacket to be size 40. It was been worn in service. It has the original owner’s name leather tag ‘R.L.Fish’ with unfortunately an unidentifiable painted squadron patch below. The original wool bands are in place, although they have suffered from some moth damage. The original Talon zip is also in place and works correctly. WE estimate a production date of the jacket of 1937/38. The lining is all intact, there is some shredding to the lining below the leather coat hanger hook close to the label, otherwise all complete and undamaged. For the collector of A2 flying jackets this is a fine example of a pre contract jacket.
