GERMAN WWII WAFFEN SS SINGLE DECAL M.42 HELMET, IDENTIFIED.
This particular helmet has had much use and with a lots of patination and is a textbook single decal SS helmet. The helmet itself is much battle scarred and has a good area of chipping and rust stain all overall. To the rear of the helmet there is a small dented area, which is more than likely battle damage. The liner of the helmet is dry and is consistent with American found helmets. The original draw cord is present, painted in a fairly rough manner with the soldier’s name ‘T.Schorn to the inner rear skirt, these deep patinated letters have minute crazing over the entire surface. The chinstrap is not present with this helmet. We can trace the helmet’s history back some way, the helmet was obtained in the United States by the museum in Malmedy, the helmet was subsequently sold to us as the museum wished to raise funds for a further purchase, on the 1st February 2013 the helmet was sold by us and has been in the same ownership since and has just been re-consigned to us as part of a very nice collection of world helmets, . The museum owner in the interim period had carried out some research and we have a photocopied sheet of information, which has come from German sources, which lists the owner’s name, rank and states that he was missing around the Aachen area of Belgium on approximately the 12th December 1944. The overall patination and age of the helmet speaks absolute volumes and this is an unmistakenly genuine SS helmet. The decal is totally flat to the paint, there is much rust bleed throughout and the configuration of the decal conforms exactly to the standard identified by the impressive historical research undertaken by various learned sources. The manufacturer of the helmet is a little indistinct, this is due to light stamping but we are fairly confident that this is in fact EF, this is stamped to the side of the helmet and the normal lot number being ‘2056’. The decal is an ET. SS helmets of any type have become the holy grail for serious helmet collectors and to find a documented named helmet with a certain degree of research that would undoubtedly become more fruitful with more in-depth study, offers a serious collector an extremely rare chance to purchase a completely untouched and extraordinary rare historic artifact.
