Known as the mark one star, these were World War I shells converted for use in World War II, with the addition of a World War II style liner, this example marked J.C.A.S. and W Ltd dated 1938, to the shell the faded insignia of red and blue of the Royal Artillery, the chinstrap complete, to the interior of the chinstrap the soldiers service number followed by the stencilled letters RA (Royal Artillery), to the interior of the bowl a white stencilled M indicating that the rim of the bowl is fitted with a mild deal band, these helmets were used in the early stages of World War II particularly during the Battle of France and the Dunkirk evacuation.
