BRITISH WWI ROYAL SCOTS KILMARNOCK BONNET.
A very scarce piece of pre World War I and World War I headdress, being a 1908 dated other ranks Kilmarnock bonnet worn by Sgt Ernest Osborne Joyce, second battalion Royal Scots, generally the bonnet is in good condition, minor moth tracking to the nap, some degrading possibly moth to the lower edges of the diced band, and complete with its silk bow, Royal Scots enlisted ranks badge mounted on another silk bow, complete with its red pom-pom, the black cotton lining has a 1908 manufacturers mark and has been heavily stencilled in white 21-2RS accompanied by the soldiers number 10789 and issue date of October 1912, Sgt Joyce was killed in action on 22 July 1916 during the Battle of the Somme and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, the Kilmarnock bonnet was issued to the Royal Scots to replace the blue Cloth helmet between 1904 and the start of World War I, period shows photographs it being worn with both full dress and service dress uniforms. A scarce item of Scottish regimental headdress.
