GERMAN WWII ADML GRAF SPEE DOCUMENTS.
Two very scarce documents with one accompanying photograph, the most important document is the Argentinian passbook for a civilian member crew of the Admiral Graf Spee, which was scuttled in Montevideo Harbour in late 1939, the sinking of the Graf Spee was Great Britain’s first Naval victory of World War II and has been subsequently recorded in both book and film. The crew departed the ship in Montevideo Harbour of the country of Uruguay and were transferred for internment to Argentina, its interned crewmembers was issued with a hard card passbook in Spanish, the pass had a photograph of the bearer, his thumb print and full details of the holder, many of the crew managed to find their way back to Germany during the course of the war very few were still in Argentina at the end of the war, this is an example of one member who did not specifically want to go back to Germany and the last entry in the passbook is November 1946. Franz Golgert was a 53-year-old civilian shoemaker on the battleship. Any documentation from this event is rare and desirable, accompanying the pass is his 1947 British Issued Plass of employment card he was employed by the Royal Navy. And is dated until January 1948. Accompanying the two passbooks is a postcard size photograph of a Naval crewmember wearing his deck cap, with a seven line inscription on the reverse side. Golgert is listed on the crew list of the HMS Ajax veterans association
