GERMAN THIRD REICH WINTER MEDAL OF THE EAST AND DEMJANSK SHIELD CITATIONS.

An interesting pair of citations, the Demjansk Shield being in a semi hard card, both A5 sized and both punch holed for filing, awarded to the unusual rank of Schirrmeister Josef Grunebach who was on the staff of Pioneer Battalion 2. The Winter Medal in the East citation, awarded 15th July 1942, unit rubber stamped with ink Battalion Commander signature. The Demjansk Shield, which is slightly larger than A5 on semi hard card, awarded December 1943 with unit rubber stamp and facsimile signature of General Brockdorff-Ahlefeldt. This unit had taken part in the invasion of France and subsequently spent of the rest of the war on the Eastern Front including being surrounded in the Demjansk Cauldron. From January 1945 it was involved in particular bitter fighting around Danzig and Kolberg being evacuated by sea. A interesting pair.
