GERMAN WWII MATCHED SS OFFICERS DAGGER AND SWORD, INDENTIFIED.

A rare combination of an SS officers sword of long length with the same officers Model 33 dagger that belonged to Waffen SS Obersturmbannfuhrer Alfred Graf. Alfred Graf was born in Kassel on the 13th December 1906 and joined the SS as an Untersturmfuhrer on the 5th April 1934 with the SS number 1969, ultimately promoted to SS Obersturmbannfuhrer in 1944, his last posting was with the 21st Mountain Division Skanderbeg, who were heavily involved in anti partisan operations in Balkan area. There has been statements made that he was the last Commander of Skanderbeg, however that is in dispute due to recent research, but he was undoubtedly a high ranking officer within Skanderbeg and Division Prinz Eugen to the end of WWII. The sword and dagger have an interesting history, which is purely an assumption on our part, they were both liberated at the same time, more than likely from Grafs home and were brought back to the United Kingdom, the sword eventually ended up in the hands of a notable collector of the 1960’s and 70’s and was then purchased by the last owner in the early 1980’s. the next part of the story is fact, some years later the dagger itself was seen at an arms and military exhibition in the United Kingdom by the last owner and he noticed the matching number to the sword and purchased the dagger thus reuniting the two pieces, these two items have been in the possession of the last owner from the mid 1980’s until very recently. The Model 33 dagger is in magnificent condition having a very good blade by the manufacturer Gottlieb Hammesfahr of Solingen, virtually all of the cross grain finish remaining to the blade, a minor area of black spotting where the blade butts up against the lower cross guard. The grip has an undamaged enamel SS inset, high quality national eagle, one minor chip to the upper right hand side of the ebony wood grip. Roman numeral group marking ‘I’ on the reverse side of the lower cross guard. Fitted into its excellent condition scabbard that has virtually all the original anodised blueing remaining to the blade, some thinness at the edges of the scabbard. The finish of the upper scabbard mount and lower scabbard mount is perfect without any indentations to the lower ball, one small knock to the lower scabbard mount on the left hand side just below the fitting screw. The dagger is fitted with a near perfect condition vertical hanging strap, which is ’Assmann’ and ‘DRGM’ marked plus a brown leather belt loop. The number ‘1969’ is stamped just underneath the lower cross guard on the reverse side of the blade. The accompanying SS officers sword has a superb blade measuring 83.5cm. The blade is faintly marked ‘Carl Julius Krebs, Solingen with number ‘1969’. The white leather washer is still intact between the blade and the lower part of the hilt, to the lower part of the D shaped hilt is the double runic symbol within an octagonal stamp, also on the throat of the upper scabbard mount .The plating to the hilt overall is excellent, considerable wear to the black finish of the wood grip indicating much service handling. A circular SS runic symbol is complete and all grip wire complete. The upper pommel is engraved with the initials ‘AG’. The sword is with its original SS sword knot and when opening the two strands of the knot the original RZM silk woven label is still visible inside. The knot itself has frayed and oxidised in places but still strong and all intact. The scabbard retains virtually 90% of its original paint finish with some minor abrasions, one small indentation below the hanging ring another quite severe indentation to the lower chape of the sword. The sword is with its original carrying bag. A magnificent set. With the sword and dagger set there is a thick file of copy documentation on Alfred Graf with photographs of him full length in Allgemeine uniform, copies of his original application to join the SS and his service record. Copies of the SS rank list showing Alfred Graf and all his awards and decorations and copies of other documents both pre war and wartime, also a document laying out his complete service record from 1934 until 1945.
