GERMAN WWII NAVAL OFFICERS SWORD.

In the series of naval officers edge weapons being both swords and daggers for the Kriegsmarine the ordnance issued officers sword is the most difficult to obtain and we rate this model of sword very highly. This example has seen service use, the full length piped back blade, which is marked with the Third Reich marine eagle and swastika just below just below the cross guard. The blade is by E & F Horster of Solingen and is in good bright condition. The hilt is the standard configuration of the lion’s head pommel without the jewelled eyes. The folding langet is adorned with the fouled anchor, the langet on the reverse side is marked with the Ost See number of ‘0.2166’. The sword is fitted into its original leather and brass fitted scabbard, the lower scabbard mount is also marked with the Third Reich marine eagle and swastika on the very lower part of the drag. There is one crease to the leather 2/3rds of the length down the lower section. All of the original fittings match exactly with their original rivets holding the fittings to the leather. The officers name of ‘H.Kittler’ is hand engraved to the reverse side of the upper scabbard mount, this engraving is unusual in itself, these swords were only issued from ordnance depots and were meant to be returned, the officer was probably breaking regulations by having his own name engraved to the sword. The upper scabbard mount also has a matching Ost See number of ‘0.2166’. Many Weimar naval period swords identical to this are often on the collectors being marketed as being of the Third Reich period, this in our opinion is incorrect, this is undoubtedly a Third Reich period issued and used sword. Some of the grip wire is slightly loose from the grip, the grip itself undamaged.
