GERMAN WWI VETERANS BANNER.
An excellent condition and highly attractive all printed and painted veterans banner measuring 105 x 145 cm, three of the edges in heavy bullion gold fringe. Although the banner is not regimentally numbered it is from a regiment in the town of Marianheide, which is in the area of North Rhine Westphalia. One side shows the large German black Eagle Order with the battle honours of the regiment set in the green wreath. To the opposite side a central female figure with applied black Eagle Orders carrying the sword and crown, stands of arms either side of the lower half of the female figure with the town name of ‘Marianheide’ below. Flaming grenades to two corners, crossed swords to a further corner. Some age fading and slight nicks to the cloth but no serious fatigue, which is normally encountered with these banners. All fitted to its double section pole, the upper pole having the Iron Cross 2nd class of WWI inset to the centre. All of the battle honours are from the Franco Prussian War of 1871. The upper pole is literally covered in 15 individual plaques commemorating the years that this flag was paraded on Regimental reunions, the lower pole has 3 further plaques applied making the total of 18 occasions the flag was paraded, the last known date being 1956. An excellent display piece as a backdrop for an Imperial German collection.
