BRITISH UNION OF FACISTS GROUP.

A very rare grouping of artefacts all relating to the British Facists movement of the 1930s known as the British Union of Fascists. The group comprises, the original owners black shirt with his British Union of Fascists badge attached . A long podium drape, a small triangular pennant . A single copy of the British Union newspaper known as Action. A pair of British World War I style trench boots, a small tin of ancillary items. All contained in a suitcase embossed with the name and title on the outside of the lid “Leonard H price, District Leader. B.U.F.” The shirt is dirty and has been cleaned a number of times, it is the classic fencing style tunic constructed in the typical grained material that the shirts were constructed in, we have had a number of these over the years and all of them constructed in the same material. Attached to the breast is the white metal BUF badge modelled on the Italian Fascist symbol, it is held to the tunic by two typical British type badge lugs, normally these types of lug fittings are held to objects by using a brass split pin on the rear in this instance the lugs have just been bent over to secure the badge to the tunic. These tunics were always very lightly white ink marked as supplied by the company Abbey supplies, in this instance the white marking has been washed away through cleaning. The podium drape measuring 307 x 87 cm in red flag cloth, and upper white selvage edge constructed in the manner that a narrow poll will pass through the selvage edge for suspension, the large white blue BUF insignia to the upper centre of the drape, on the rear of the flag a tape for securing to presumably a stage , this drape typical of those seen at the British Union of Fascists rallies either side of the main podium. A very small element of moth to the lower left point of the flag and some light staining overall, this is a single sided podium banner. Accompanied by a 46 x 19 cm single sided car pennant, the manner in which the central BUF logo is fitted would indicate that this was for fitting to a motorcar wing, an aperture at the front of the pennant for the fitting of a suspension pole. Stamped to the rear of the pennant in blue ink Abbey Supplies Ltd Great Smith St, SW1 .(The company of Abbey supplies were part of the British Union organisation ). A single copy of the October 10, 1936 action newspaper. Small box of ancillary items which includes a German SS/SA M 29 style eagle with its pins missing with a 4.5 cm wingspan. In late 1938 the BUF press stating its intention to bring North Hackney back to Britain, the movement opened a branch in the North Hackney division under the stewardship of its first district leader, the cabinetmaker, Leonard Price. Price came from a family of BUF members, in 1940 Leonard Price and his wife Florence were detained in the Isle of Man under the defence regulation 18 B is not known when they were released.
