A fabulous General’s uniform being the ex property of Major General Gunther Angern, born March 1893 died 2nd February 1943, a German General in the army during WWII who commanded the 16th Panzer Division during the battle of Stalingrad. He was also a recipient of the Knights Cross to the Iron Cross. He initially joined the Imperial German Army as a junior officer and fought throughout WWI. In the interwar period he joined the Third Reich Wehrmacht and by 1938 was Commander of the 3rd Rifle Brigade. In August 1940, now a Colonel, he was awarded the Knights Cross to the Iron Cross whilst commanding the Brigade in France. He saw service in Russia from August 1941, wounded in Russia and returned to duty as a now General Major in September 1942 and took command of the 16th Panzer Division operating to the north of the city of Stalingrad. Angern remained in Stalingard throughout the siege and was promoted to General Lieutenant in January 1943. He stayed with the army after failing to escape the encirclement by the Russian and he committed suicide on the 2nd February 1943. Excellent condition M.36 style piped uniform with the front skirt of the tunic piped in red, the upper cuffs piped in red, the dark green collar also piped in red. Very high quality bullion wire collar patches fitted with matching General Majors bullion wire gold and silver lace with red underlay shoulder boards. Fitted to the upper left breast is a matching gold bullion wire on green breast eagle. All of the buttons match in gold. To the upper right breast there are five loops for a medium size medal ribbon bar with loops below for two awards. To the interior a silk woven Leipzig tailor’s label, to the interior of the pocket the canvas label of the same tailor with the name ‘Gunther’ to the interior number ‘599’ dated ‘11/3/41’. Also to the interior a sword or dagger hanger clip with a hole tailored through the lower left hand pocket. A pair of grey Generals breeches with the correct pattern of red stripes to each seam. The whole uniform is totally free of any moth damage or staining.
