BRITISH WWI ROYAL NAVAL VOLUNTEER RESERVE LONDON CAP TALLY.
A rare naval cap tally worn by the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve London Division circa 1914. Full length gold wire lettering on black silk ribbon. The RNVR was mobilised at the beginning of WWI and those not required for sea service were converted into infantry soldiers as part of the Royal Naval Division to help relieve pressure on regular infantry. The Division was formed from three naval brigades who were soon sent to support the Belgium Army in the defence of Antwerp where the troops were sent into action still wearing naval rig including the RNVR tallies on their caps. Excellent photographs complete with the tally. The Royal Naval Division went on to see distinguished infantry service in Gallipoli along the western front as the 63rd Royal Naval Division.
