GERMAN WWI SAXON LEIB GRENADIER REGIMENT NO.100 ENLISTED RANKS PICKELHAUBE.
An extremely difficult helmet to find being a regimentally marked all leather pickelhaube from the Leib Grenadier Regiment No.100 of Saxony. The helmet is not size stamped, but on test possibly size 54. Good leather skull with crazing overall. Both peaks slightly congealed but with stitching strong and securely attached to the main body. The unique feature of the Leib Grenadier Regiment is that all the fittings for both the officers and mans helmets are in white metal. Slight distortion to the back strap, non removable white metal spike and spike base, white metal Saxon starburst with gilded Saxon overlay plate. White trim to the front peak, unusually without any kinks to the trim. Original chinstrap with all white metal fittings, white metal strap posts and with its correct Saxon non serrated style national and State cockades. Some slight loss of paint through rust to the Saxon cockade. To the interior one of the tongues of the 10 tongued liner slightly frail but the helmet is still with its original leather drawstring. Profusely stamped to the rear peak, the first date being ‘1901’, the second date being ‘1898’. Marked 100R with a further date, the last two digits of the date ‘98’. The securing nut that holds the back strap into place on the inside of the rear peak is missing. A fine example of a regimentally marked rare pickelhaube.
