GERMAN WWII AFRIKA KORPS M.40 FIELD CAP RECONNAISSANCE.
A rare colour waffenfarbe for the M.40 field cap, which retains much of its original colour and has not bleached, with its correct Bevo woven blue on tan eagle. It would appear that the eagle has been replaced at some time during its life, it was very common for prisoners of war to come home with their cap and re-attach their eagle, which they retained post war. It should be remembered that German prisoners of war within the American prison camps, mainly in Texas, were allowed to wear all their insignia and awards right up until the discovery of the concentration camps in April 1945, before that point the American administration of the camps was very benign but after the discovery of the camps the American’s policy towards German prisoners turned to semi hatred. The cap still has its rare Motorised Reconnaissance copper brown insignia, untouched machine sewn cockade. It would appear also that the two air vents have become badly oxidised and both eyelets have either been removed or dropped out. To the interior the faint remains of a Clemens Wagner oval manufacturers stamping.
