GERMAN WWII WAFFEN SS CAVALRY OFFICERS VISOR CAP.

An incredibly rare visor cap of WWII being the SS officers saddle shaped visor cap with cavalry yellow piping with issue markings to the 2nd Totenkopf Cavalry Regiment to the interior in two places. We have also noticed over many years of trading in these artefacts that so many but not all of the higher quality officers visor caps and some M.43 officers caps do appear in a lighter dove grey material more so than army grey green and this is an example of the dove grey upper body to the cap. The size on test probably 56. Some light moth tracking to the crown area. The upper crown waffenfarbe totally free of any moth damage. The upper yellow waffenfarbe above the black velvet centre band has one moth nip at the rear of the cap, the lower waffenfarbe section of the black velvet centre band is totally free of any moth nips. Fitted with its absolutely original untouched national SS eagle and skull, the eagle itself appears to be virtually welded to the cap. Standard tight black velvet centre band, matching white cap buttons with standard officers cord. Standard fibre peak, which does have finger and thumb marks to the inside maroon colour. The sweatband is all complete and is with evidence of heavy wear use. The interior of the main body of the cap in a light brushed fawn cotton with the upper inner crown area in a grained silk. The central lozenge is slightly cracked but is generally complete and has an unidentified maker’s coat of arms. A few stitches at the end of the visor on both sides of the cap have come adrift rendering the peak slightly loose, mainly on one side. On pulling down the sweatband there are two sets of markings, on one side there is the faded markings of an owner’s name, followed by the designation ‘T.R.R.2’ (Totenkopf Reiter Regiment 2), on the opposite side of the cap in a more official form of a rectangular ink block there is an indistinct word, which possibly could be Gepruft/R.R.2, which is clearer. There are no other holes to the inner cardboard band, indicating that the insignia is totally original to the cap. All of the folds to the interior of the cap are in their original position. Some of the stitching that holds the inner lining to the base of the cap are loose with discoloration from wear use of a wearer’s head. The 2nd Totenkopf Reiter Regiment was formed in July 1940, the date of which coincides to the introduction of the yellow piped caps and as is well known by collectors this order was rescinded later in the year, subsequently the caps were only offered to officers for a very short time, although of course many wore their caps right throughout their period of service. The Totenkopf Cavalry Regiment No.2 was eventually absorbed into the SS Cavalry Division Florian Geyer in August 1941.
