GERMAN WWI AVIATORS LEATHER FLYING HELMET AND PHOTOGRAPH.
A good small group comprising of a well service used Imperial German flying helmet of the standard form, the outer leather crown is crazed overall through heat, some abrasions to the leather of the edge and the crown cushion, complete with its front peak, ear protectors and neck flap, the neck flap is issue stamped however through age and dirt it is difficult to clearly make out any of the markings. Inside the front peak the initials ‘H.O?’ have been hand applied. Accompanying the helmet is a studio portrait, head and shoulders of an Imperial German aviator wearing the Litewka tunic with his flying wing propeller shoulder boards clearly visible. The picture is slightly faded, situated in its black wood frame, interestingly the backing of the frame including its stand is profusely covered in impregnated Iron Crosses. The condition of the frame and the picture identical in storage staining to the helmet indicating that the picture and the helmet more than likely belonged to the same man.
