GERMAN WWI COLONIAL SERVICE VETERANS UNIFORM.
A beautiful condition large size uniform in the light corduroy tan of the colonial uniforms, both tunic and trousers collar, front trim of the jacket and turned back cuffs all trimmed with blue with twin Colonial Service red, white and black shoulder boards. All white metal buttons with the colonial style crown fitted. Above the right hand pocket are five loops for a long medal ribbon bar with a pair of loops below the pocket for a First War award. To the lower right sleeve as the tunic is viewed is the beautifully machine embroidered insignia of what is known as the Petersflagge. During the Third Reich period this would have been worn with a swastika armband of which there is thread evidence where it was once placed and also clearly viewed is the outline of the colonial breast eagle attached to the upper left hand breast as the tunic is worn. A fine example of this uniform can be seen being worn on page 378 of the excellent work The German Colonial Troops 1889-1918. The indication that this tunic has six buttons only and straight pocket flaps plus the Peterflagge insignia without Swastika could possibly date it to the early 1920’s, pre Third Reich period and then utilised during the Third Reich period with the addition of the swastika armband and breast eagle. A very good website entitled German Colonial Uniforms Exists on the internet, with huge in-depth detail with accompanying photographs.
