BRITISH EXPERIMENTAL MACHINE GUN PHOTOGRAPH.

Recently Regimentals have been lucky enough to buy an excellent and well put together Machine Gun Corps related collection. A most intriguing photo worthy of much research. The photo itself clearly shows two Canadian ordinance corps colour sergeants wearing very early Canadian 02 type tunics with stand collars and separate epaulettes with coloured edging. The both have artificers cross tool badges to the upper arms stood with various civilians and a senior looking colour sergeant of a British unit wearing a British 02 tunic. They are stood around an enormous machine gun which we believe to be a version of the 37 mm pom pom gun. To the front are two chalked tablets one reading 'Enfield Maxim gun course,' and the next is showing various Canadian insignias. One would imagine Canadian artificers travelling to the UK to receive advanced training in machine gun maintenance and possibly they would be evaluating the issued guns. It is believed 722 were manufactured and were mostly exported to the U.S for U.S Navy use. Interestingly to the reverse of the card is a staff sergeant's name and address and he mentions upon the card that shortly he will be returning to Canada. We cannot ascertain whether this man was in fact a Canadian or a British soldier, however, research is necessary. The card was probably produced by a photograph taken by a photographer and only reproduced in very limited numbers. The ink stamp to the reverse reads 'August 24 1912.' An intriguing and important card, overall in very good condition unfortunately with one fold 3/4 of the way along, however, the image remains good and strong.
