GERMAN PRE WWI 1813 IRON CROSS.

A rare example of the 1813 Iron Cross. First instituted in the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars the Iron Cross 2nd class of 1813 was very rarely awarded. This example is virtually identical in all details to the very fine example shown on pages 36 and 37 of the excellent work on the history of the Iron Cross The Iron Time by Stephen Thomas Previtera. Narrow but sturdy silver frame with the thick ribbon ring and eyelet, the core is of the step-down style and sits deeply within the frame, the central core is not cracked as quite often happen with this period of award and it is with a original ribbon. It is estimated that 16,000 of these 1813 Iron Cross were ever awarded.
