ENGLISH BAKER RIFLE.

Possibly the best example outside of a museum available in the United Kingdom today. This late pattern 30 inch barrelled Baker flintlock rifle, the first rifled arm of the British Army. The wood stock is magnificent with just very minor light bruising, beautifully coloured overall, no repairs or restorations. All of the brass fittings, which combine the trigger set, guard, the patch box, the butt plate, the rammer pipes and the section at the very end of the fore stock, side plate and escution all match. The 30 inch barrel retains virtually all its original browned twist finish. Fixed rear sight. Fixed front sight. Bayonet bar attached to the barrel. Ramrod in place. Both sling swivels complete. The lock is beautifully fitted to the stock, crown over ‘GR’ marked ‘RL.M.Y Enfield’. Lock and trigger action perfect. On opening the patch box the wood interior is like new. The weapon overall is profusely marked ‘BO’ with broad arrow to the side of the stock, individual gun number ‘204’ close to the patch box, various ordnance stamps at the end of the brass trigger guard, the barrel is profusely marked, the tang of the barrel with crown over ‘9’, inspectors marks to the left hand side in the breech area. All screws original, minor evidence of the screw heads being turned at least once. Rifling to the barrel mint. We can only assume that this weapon have been displayed in a museum for a great length of time, it has been at one time issued indicated by its individual gun number of 204. Produced between 1800 and 1838, the number approximately built of 22,000, this is a late construction piece being of the 30 inch barrel variety. The Baker was used by what were considered elite units of rifle regiments and were used in all the major engagements of the Peninsular War, the American War of Independence and the Battle of Waterloo. Overseas countries also purchased examples of the Baker.
