GERMAN WWI OLDENBURG DRAGOON ENLISTED RANKS HELMET.

A rare helmet of WWI being an enlisted mans pickelhaube in the Oldenburg Dragoons. Good size, possibly 56. The skull is good and firm with crazing overall. Both front and rear peaks securely attached to the main body, the rear peak having standard crazing common to all leather pickelhaubes, the front peak is without crazing, which interestingly is constructed in the fibre known as Vulkan Fibre. The helmet has all of its field grey patinated fittings, which all match, which includes the back strap, the non removable spike on its dragoon style cruciform spike base, Prussian dragoon type eagle with the overlay plate of Oldenburg with its national and Oldenburg cockade, original chinstrap with chemically patinated buckles. To the interior the 9 tongued liner all intact, to the rear peak various markings, which include markings of a repair and replacement depot ‘B.I.A.VII’ with large letter ‘F’ in two places indicating for field service only, which indicates the helmet has been back to a repair depot, there is the evidence of one hole behind the helmet plate, which has been plugged, this would not have been a hole for another plate fitment as it is completely the wrong place and one can only presume that this was repaired battle damage. A rare helmet.
