IMPERIAL GERMAN NAVAL OFFICERS PRESENTATION SWORD.

A most superb Imperial German naval officers sword, length of blade 84cm, overall length of the sword with hilt and scabbard 106cm indicating this was a tall officer. The blade is a standard piped back naval officers blade but is with a full length Damascus pattern with the upper section of the blade of 29cm with an inlaid panel with gold decoration. To one side within a double scroll in silver laid on gilt ‘Eisenhauer Echt Damast’ with sailing ship decoration, the maker of ‘Ewald Cleff, Solingen’, the gilt decoration runs around the piped back section of the blade, which includes again the manufacturer’s name. To the opposite side the name of the recipient ‘Weihe’ silver on a gilt base. The hilt standard bowl shape but with very deep lion’s mane decoration on the hilt back strap, lion’s head face with twin ruby eyes. The bowl again with very deep decoration with a central oval containing the Imperial Crown with fouled anchor below. The leather scabbard with three gilded mounts with the owner’s name ‘Weihe’ engraved in script form to the reverse side of the upper scabbard mount. The leather is strong although flaking in places, minor indentations to the lower scabbard mount, all the original staples in place to hold the fittings to the leather. The grip appears to be of an early composition with all of its grip wire in place. By researching through the naval rank directories the name of Weihe should be obtainable and subsequently his service record.
