IMPERIAL GERMAN FLIEGER ABTEILUNG 501 HEAVY BOMBER GROUP PAPERWORK.

A rare set of paperwork to Unteroffizier Morgenroth who was an air gunner in Flieger Abteilung 501. Flieger Abteilung 501 were one of the very few aircraft units flying the giant bomber bi-planes of WWI. 501 was set up in 3rd August 1916, we believe there were only two units flying these huge aircraft, Flieger Abteilung 500 and 501. The documents comprise Iron Cross 2nd class dated ’18.1.18’, pencil signed by a Lieutenant and a Buro-officer A5 size folded twice. Iron Cross 1st class A5 size folded twice, signed by Squadron Rittmeister with Aviation Service over-stamp. The ultra rare award certificate A5 size, folded twice with scuffed edges for the Prussian Friegerschutzen Abzeichen (the Air Gunners Badge) to the now Unteroffizier Morgenroth dated ‘26th May 1918’ signed by Lieutenant and Buro officer with Aviation Service over-stamp, numbered ‘501’. Promotion document from Gefreiter to Unteroffizier dated ’30.12.1917’ for Morgenroth, folded twice, pen signed by an unidentified officer. A ’21st March 1918’ A5 size document, folded three times being headed Ausweis identifying Morgenroth as an Unteroffizier, his date of birth with Aviation Service over-stamp. The Third Reich awarded A5 size citation for the War Honour Cross, dated ‘10th October 1934’ individually numbered ‘669’. A further A5 size document, folded once being a ‘1936’ dated citation for the Wound Badge in black issued in Oldenburg to Karl Morgenroth, we can only assume this was a late WWI application by Morgenroth for his Wound Badge award and citation. Lastly and most importantly his original military pass and soldbuch set, page 1 of the soldbuch gives full details of Morgenroth and his date of birth and other family details with a deep stamping of ‘Flieger-Ers.Abtlg.No2 2.Adlershof’. Page 2 with further details of his original units. Pages 8 and 9 further details of his units with the over-stamp of the Fliegertruppen’. Pages 10 and 11 fully filled out. On the reverse side of an inserted pullout page the page headed ‘Flieger Abteilung 501’ shows a list of his raids, which include two over London, one over Chelmsford, three over Calais, most of the raids over London in WWI were carried out by the Zeppelin troops, very few were carried out by the Fliegertruppen. His soldbuch is in nice condition, spine strengthened, fully filled out with in-depth detail. It would appear he was originally a member of Flieger Abteilung 500 and then moved into 501. There is mention in April 17 him training on a Gotha and many other interesting details. A rare document group to one of the aviators who flew over London in WWI and includes the ultra rare document of the Air Gunners award badge. Only 17 of the 59 occasions London was bombed, were by aeroplanes the rest were by the Zeppelins.
