ENGLISH 17TH LANCERS OFFICERS LANCE CAP.
A very good condition 1902 to 1910 period 17th Lancers officers lance cap. The 17th, the most famous regiment of all the British Lancer Regiments, mainly for their Charge of the Light Brigade exploits but serving in many other campaigns throughout the Victorian period to include Alma, Balaclava, Sevastopol, Inkerman, Central India, South Africa 1879 and lastly South Africa 1900 to 1901. The helmet is in excellent condition, some slight crazing overall to the pressed felt skull but no actual damage. The white mortarboard top having the nap of all the cloth present, no moth damage as can quite often happen to these helmets. Slight rusting flooding through from the edges of the mortarboard top, the interior of the mortarboard top is steel and in damp condition can rust, which is exactly what has happened here, however these are only minor stains. All the bullion lacework good and bright with its correct front heavy bullion pompom with the ‘GR’ intertwined scroll to the centre, with its correct chin chain, officers velvet backed. All of the peak trim weave in excellent order. To the interior the grained leather sweatband complete with minor evidence of service wear with its Sandilands & Company inner purple silk liner with faint traces of the Sandilands Company logo to the upper inner section of the liner. The helmet is complete with its officers full dress swan feather plume and correct officers plume holder. The front plate with all battle honours and the classic skull and crossbones insignia of the 17th with the scroll ‘OR GLORY’ below.
