GERMAN WWI IMPERIAL GERMAN GUARD CAVALRY OFFICERS SWORD.

An excellent sword with an 81cm Spearpoint blade with central blued and gilt inlay panels on both sides. The Damascus pattern is standard water Damascus. The gilt surrounding the two panels excellent with the gilt to the lettering faded. To one side reads in German ‘WITH FRIENDLY MEMORIES OF CASSEL 1888’ with the face side ‘VON STEINBERG FREIHERRN VON KETTELER’, the Von Ketteler name is a well known aristocratic name within Germany and we have not had the time to further deeply research this officer, this is obviously a gift from one officer to another in memory of their service in one of the Guard Cavalry regiments in 1888 in Cassel. The blade is by WKC with the Eisenhauer Damast-Stahl oval circlet to the upper part of the blade. The hilt is the massive size hilt with the Garde Korps badge to the front langet, gilt excellent overall, red ruby eyes to the lion’s head. The fish skin grip is intact with grip wire. All fitted into its original nickel plated scabbard, which has lost some of its nickel plating, there are no dents or damage to the scabbard with both hanging rings complete. To the rear of the piped back blade close to the hilt is the name of the retailer of ‘Carl Stahl, Cassel’.
