GERMAN WWI WURTTEMBERG PIONEER BATTALION NCO'S ERSATZ HELMET.
A very scarce configuration for an ersatz felt helmet, worn by an NCO in Wurttemberg Pioneer Battalion No.13. Standard felt body, non size marked but possibly 54. The body is extremely good with all nap of the felt proud of the main body, all the stitching is good. All of the fittings, which include the non removable spike, circular spike base, cut out crown officer quality front plate, strap fittings are all in white metal, which is the correct colour configuration for the Wurttemberg Pioneer Battalion. Worn by an NCO, if he was allowed to wear chinstraps they would have been in gilt but obviously of a lower rank NCO he has to keep to the leather chinstrap but has made the addition of the strap fitting posts being in brass. Fitted with original Reich and Wurttemberg cockades with good colour. The interior has the 8 tongue liner in superb condition, the leather supple with its original leather drawstring. To the inner rear peak is the marking 'PB' the '1' is clear but the '3' is indistinct. Complete with an indelible pencil marking of an original owner's name. A small ordnance depot stitch repair only to the turn of the inner felt edge to the body on the rear peak. An extremely scarce helmet.
