BRITISH VICTORIAN 9TH QUEEN’S ROYAL LANCERS OFFICERS HELMET & TIN.
A fabulous condition 9th Lancer officers helmet identified, to Hamilton H. Johnstone Esquire 9th Lancers. The helmet body itself is absolutely superb and in a huge size, which always gives the helmet more presence. The black ribbed sides to the mortarboard are completely free of any moth damage. The gilt to all the fittings, which include the corners to the mortarboard top, the gilded strips flowing down each corner of the mortarboard, the huge front Victorian front plate, the chin chain, which is different than any other Lancer Regiment chain being identical to a British Hussar officers chain but slightly wider, the lion’s head side bosses. The front plate has the Victorian Crown with Battle Honours from the Peninsular War up until Kabul Afghanistan. The large gilt rosette with its correct 9th Lancers button attached. To the interior all of the Morocco mid tan leather sweatband is all complete showing minor wear use. Some stitches holding the bottom of the liner to the main body slightly rotted and loose. To the interior the original red inner silk is all present with the remains of the upper inner mortarboard silk which has the faint remains of the manufacturer’s label ‘Hamburger & Rogers, Covent Garden London’. The helmet is complete with its correct officers undress black and white long horsehair plume, the officers undress plumes differ from the enlisted mans by virtue of their length. The helmet is also complete with its undress plume holder. A tin with some slight surface rusting with the name plaque ‘Hamilton H.Johnstone Esquire, 9th Lancers’ attached to the upper outer lid.
