An excellent condition Victorian crowned officers lance cap of the 21st (Empress of India’s) Lancers. The sky blue mortarboard top has some thinness to the nap of cloth with minor moth nips as our web images would have picked up with minor moth nips to the ribbed sides of the mortarboard top. All of the silver lace to the crown, around the base of the mortarboard top, the front peak trim, the lower part of the skull all excellent with some minor staining to the area that butts to the very base of the rabbit skin skull. Complete with its correct lion’s head side rosettes, its original chin chain with velvet lining, Complete with its officers VR gold bullion pompom with its correct officers ribbed plume holder and fitted with its light blue swan feather plume. To the interior the light tan Morocco sweatband is intact, the red inner silk lining has shot and is missing. The large triangular form front plate with its Royal Coat of Arms, the one Battle Honour to the Regiment of Khartoum with ‘VR’ below, twin lance pennons above the lion of the Victorian crown, one of the tips of one lance pennon bent, all of the other floriated work all complete and undamaged. The 21st Lancers originally formed in India in 1858 as the 3rd Bengal Infantry European Light Cavalry, in 1862 is was re-designated as a Hussar Regiment and entitled the 21st Regiment of Hussars, in 1897 it was re-designated as a Lancer Regiment finally becoming the 21st Lancers. In 1898 the Regiment was serving in the Sudan, it was there that the full Regiment charged with lances in the classic cavalry style during the battle of Omdurman, the Regiment won three Victoria Crosses in that charge. Winston Churchill, then an officer in the 4th Hussars rode with the unit with probably one of the first battlefield uses of the Mauser 1897 automatic pistol that he was carrying, the only Battle Honour was Khartoum and in 1921 the Regiment was amalgamated with the 17th Lancers to form the 17th 21st Lancers.
