IMPERIAL GERMAN AVIATORS HELMET.
A rare example of a canvas covered felt and cork aviators crash helmet. Normal examples are in either green or black leather, due to possibly shortages of that material this is a cork formed helmet with thick felt padded crown and sides covered in field grey canvas. To the rear of the helmet, which can be viewed with our web images a section of the canvas has removed itself from the comb revealing the felt beneath and some also which appears to be burnt from the rear of the bowl of the helmet. It is complete with its two ear flaps, which have openings to aid hearing and its rear neck flap, which is torn at the lower edge but clearly marked ‘FL1’ and a large date of ‘1916’ also the closing leather strap and buckle are in place. To the interior the liner is all complete with its ‘Mars’ maker and ‘DRGM’ marked label plus large ink stamp of size ‘57’. This model is far more difficult to obtain than the leather covered versions. ). Ex Michael Baldwin collection. Shown on pages 84, 85, 86 and 87 of Feldzug 1916.
