FRENCH WWI PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM FROM AN ACE.

An excellent grouping comprising of a French photograph album, very large size, letters and cards of the Great War pilot George Barberot tracing his service primarily on the Western Front, images provide a record of many WWI French aircraft together with British aircraft on the French airfields, such as the Martinside, RE8 and Sopwith tri-plane etc., In addition a number of first class aerial photographs of the battlefront and cities affected by bombardment notably Rheims in April and Soissons in August 1918. Photographs of the pilot's unit include an unusual image of the pilot taken by the observer from the rear seat and some spectacular close-up photographs of crashed aircraft, most with captions. Powerful battlefield images, many showing the horrors of war are also present together with some excellent photographs of German aircraft and personnel. Of particular interest is a sequence of photographs taken from the ground of the results of a bombing attack and the extensive fire that was caused. There are also details of the armament and bombs carried by the Friedricshafen airships. A further series of photographs probably post war are taken in North Africa, a number of Tangier and later in the album an interesting series of General De Gaulle during WWII. In addition a quantity of wartime and other letters and cards mostly received by Barberot. A comprehensive and important album together with associated letters and some paperwork. Approximately 290 photographs in all, contained in its period red cloth large size album.
