BRITISH WWI WELSH KNIFE.

The fiercesome weapon used by the Royal Welsh Fusiliers during WWI, privately provided by Lord Howard de Walden to his battalion, it was based on the design from the ancient Welsh Cledd. It was designed and patented by Felix Joubert in 1917. The blade and hilt are forged from one piece and circular fold back hand guard is fitted via a slot in the hilt, the hilts were always cord bound. The examples we have had previously have never had the motto 'DROS URDDAS CYMRU' to the ricasso, this example is complete with its motto. It also has its small 'J' over 'O' over stamping. The blade on this example is extremely good, it has never been reprofiled or sharpened, there are minor rust spots, the cording to the hilt is all complete with its original cord wrist strap. The very complicated canvas wrapped over leather scabbard is all complete and in good form and firm condition with the exception of the belt loop, which in the 1914 style leather has rotted. The very tip to the scabbard still has its 1914 grained leather tip, although somewhat thin. All of the webbing covering to the leather is intact and firm. A very fine example of this rare and desirable knife, examples of which are shown on page 17 and 18 of the excellent work by Ron Flook British and Commonwealth Military Knives.
